Digital vs Film
After reviewing the article 'What is Digital Photography?' I became more aware of the differences between the two mediums from both a technical and artistic view point.
It's quite clear that digital photography is based on 1s and 0s, but what most novice and amateur photographers lack is the knowledge of what is going on behind the scenes of their digital cameras and photo software. This lack of knowledge is more prevalent than it was in the era of film because the film process is much easier to view externally, both with the camera and with in the processing steps. Digital also changed the paths of photography distribution, when photos had to be moved as physical pieces of matter; either from a photographer to a publisher or from the publisher to the consumer. Digital expedites this process exponentially by allowing the photographer to display their work immediately to an endless audience via the Web.
From an artistic perspective digital expands the capabilities of things photographers can capture from either allowing the camera to see light waves that are invisible to human eyes and also allowing quick changes of camera parameters without changing film or equipment. The photographer also has more flexibility in post processing using photography software. If the image was captured in RAW format the photographer can quickly change any exposure or white balance mistakes. The remaining possibilities in digital photo manipulation are endless, contrasts, cropping, retouching, color curves, etc.
